Fort Hood shooter requests ISIS citizenship

This article released by CNN reports the request from the Fort Hood shooter, Nadal Hasan, to become an official citizen of Islamic State. His request was addressed in a formal letter to the leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The article was published at 11:41 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, by CNN reporter, Chelsea Carter. Details of the letter written by Hasan were initially reported by Fox News.

This story particularly strikes a nerve with American citizens as ISIS threats have rapidly arisen around the nation and the world. Hasan is currently on the military’s death row for killing thirteen individuals and injuring many more in the Fort Hood Shooting of 2009. This shooting was his response to the knowledge that he would be deployed to Afghanistan to fight fellow Muslims. The discovery of this letter is particularly impactful as the ISIS threat continues to grow around the world. It is important for not only Americans, who personally felt the impacts of the Fort Hood shooting, but also other countries around the world to be aware of the growing threats from ISIS. This story is extremely timely in the sense that many issues regarding ISIS have recently occurred and headlined in the news. On Friday, the day this story arose, The United Kingdom raised its terror threat level from substantial to severe. Hasan’s request for citizenship was also written and declared as ISIS beheaded American journalist, James Wright Foley.  The threats and those killed by ISIS terrorists are only increasing in numbers, and the awareness of related issues must grow alongside it.
