Is a hard life inherited?

This column by Nicholas Kristof published on Aug, 9 talks about the obstacles the working class face. Kristof believes that people born into poverty lack the opportunities middle class people receive. His solution is a higher minimum wage, early childhood programs, a focus on education and empathy.

Kristof starts the column with commentary on the advantages people born into the middle class have. The lede is strong, concise and provides the point of the column. The body of the piece is a narrative about his friend’s struggles being born into the lower class and not being able to move out of it. Kristof uses this narrative to make his point that people born into the lower class have a bigger disadvantage and end up remaining in poverty. The quotes he uses from his friend add personality to the story and explain in detail how his friend struggles with poverty. Kristof uses his friends story to evoke emotion from readers and help them realize the problem and want to fix it with the solutions he gives at the end. There is now wrap up at the end instead he closes with solutions to the problem.
