Passport Stripping British Terror Suspects

This story was published in the USA Today on September 1, 2014, you can find the story here. Under the new proposed legislature by British Prime Minister David Cameron, British national citizens fighting out of the country in the Middle East suspected of terrorist acts would have their passports suspended – effectively denying re-entry into the United Kingdom.  Cameron believes there is a strong existing threat of those fighting outside of the country to return with terrorist intent.

This story is extremely unique in the sense that Great Britain is considering denying re-entry of it’s own citizens into the country.  This becomes a major problem in the sense that where do speculation of terrorism stop?  How many nationals of the country can they deny re-entry because of a possibility of suspected terrorism.  Suspending a nationals passport doesn’t seem like something that can be done on pure speculation and nothing else. ‘Suspending’ these passports, is effectively kicking these suspected nationals out of the country, there is no way to give a timetable for how long this terrorist breakdown will take. Furthermore, the article states that the clause would only apply to British nationals who hold two passports.  With this, the issue becomes the fact that Britain is discriminating against those who aren’t only British nationals.  Who’s to say that a British national with only one passport couldn’t commit acts of terrorism, and dual nationals can?
